World's Largest Chipmaker Intel unveils new Xeon chip
Intel Corp will introduce its new Xeon chip on 29/06/98 for powerful computers that cost as much as US$20000 (S$33740) as the world's largest chipmaker pushes further into the backbone of corporate computer systems.
Machines with Xeon will start shipping this week, although the most powerful computer that use four of the chips together will not start shipping until August because of a flaw in the chip when it is used with other chips for a four-way server.
The new chip, which analysts expect to cost between US$1500 and US$3000 and runs at speed as high as 400 MHz, will bridge the gap between personal computers and Pentium II servers and the high-end central computers used in corporate networks.
Merced is Intel's 64 bit chip that was delayed until 2000 and will push Intel-powered computer into the highest reaches of corporate computer systems.
International Business Machines Corp, Dell Computer Corp and others will be among those that announce new systems based around the Xeon chip. Dell will start shipping systems tomorrow. IBM's more powerful systems will not start shipping until August. The new feature that makes Xeon important is its ability to run on servers that use four processors, and will eventually be able to link even more.

Handphone add-on

Philips Electronics plans to release a handphone add-on that will enable users to enjoy a full suite of communications functionality. Called Synergy, the unit snaps onto the back of a Philips Illum handphone to transform it into a mobile fax and communications information manager.
It contains an integrated mailbox which handles e-mail, fax and SMS meassges. With its phone book, agenda, "to-do" lists, clock, and calculator, the Synergy Illum also serves as a personal organiser. The Philips Synergy will be available in August.

Creative's New Product.

From the makers of sound blaster, Creative have introduced its latest product - BlasterPC. BlasterPC is the nest generation state of the art computer. Equipped almost entirely on creative products, the PC is certainly on a far more advanced than high-end machines. Amazingly, these Pentium II - Powered speed demons cost at around from $2682 to approx. $3300. Computer buyers should try and give this BlasterPC a chance. It is certainly a good computer to start with. The Creators of ClockWeb give it 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Gateway Solo lightens up

Gateway 2000 Inc's new Solo 5100 series of notebooks running on Intel Corp's latest mobile Pentium II processors has introduced the Intel Mobile Module (IMM) on its mobile platforms. The IMM allows for rapid and smooth transition to new processors without major chassis revisions. The Solo 5100XL boasts a 233MHz CPU, a 14.1-inch TFT LCD, 32MB RAM, CD-ROM drive and is priced from S$5,713.

Kayak races upstream

Hewlett-Packard Co has announced plans to integrate Intel's new 350MHz and 400MHz Pentium II processors into its HP Kayak PC Workstations. By combining this strategy with HP's 3D graphics solutions in Visualize fx4, performance-optimized system design and low cost of ownership, HP hopes to maintain their lead in the workstation arena.
